Electric, petrol or diesel: how Ukrainians' automobile preferences are changing

The engine type is not just a technical characteristic, but a key factor that directly affects the cost of maintaining a car. Especially now, when the prices for fuel, electricity and maintenance change with enviable regularity. We decided to figure out how Ukrainians chose between gasoline, diesel, hybrids and electric cars in the first months of 2025 - and how these preferences differ from last year.

Used cars: gasoline is stable, electrics are on the rise

As expected, the secondary market is stable, according to data from shelby.com.ua. The bulk of cars are gasoline cars. Their share in the registration structure reached 44% - just a fraction of a percent higher than last year. This suggests that Ukrainians still prefer proven options, especially given the affordability of such cars.

Diesel is gradually losing ground - minus 2% per year, now its share is just over 28%. The reasons are clear: expensive spare parts, the capriciousness of modern diesel engines, as well as tightening environmental standards.

It is interesting that electric cars, although not dominant, are still strengthening their position. For the first time, their share in the used car market exceeded 7%. This suggests that the fleet of electric cars has begun to "age", and cars after several years of operation are increasingly put up for sale. People are willing to buy used electric cars - after all, this is a chance to enter the "green" theme with lower costs.

LPG continues to lose popularity. In conditions when gas has ceased to be clearly profitable, and conversion is expensive, many simply do not see the point in it. But hybrids, although they occupy a modest niche, are slowly growing. Apparently, this is what the transitional stage looks like: when you want "in a new way", but are afraid to give up the internal combustion engine completely.

New cars: hybrids are in fashion, diesel is on the way out

In the segment of new cars, the picture is completely different. Here, Ukrainians have begun to actively rethink what exactly they need. And, it seems, many have found the answer in hybrid solutions.

Over the year, the share of hybrids has doubled – from 15% to 27%. This is almost a third of the entire market. Buyers are attracted by the combination of economy, technology and less fear of charging: after all, a hybrid does not require complete dependence on a socket.

Gasoline cars still retain the lead, but are inferior. Now their share is 37%, which is 5% less than a year ago. Diesel fell even more – by 6%, to 20%. More and more Ukrainians understand: diesel is not about the future.

Electric cars on the new car market showed a slight decline. Minus less than 1%, but the fact is a fact. The reasons may be different: price, lack of charging stations, doubts about the battery life. But in general, electric cars are holding on, and this is important.

Cars with LPG have almost disappeared – less than 0.2% of sales. They have probably exhausted themselves as a temporary solution.

Conclusions: the market is changing – and with it, people’s thinking

Today’s Ukrainian car market is like two parallel worlds. In the secondary market, there is stability, gasoline and a little diesel. People buy what they already have, what they know. But among new cars, there is a real transformation. The transition to hybrids looks like a step towards the new, but without a radical rejection of the familiar.

This is more than just statistics. This is an indicator of how the logic of choice is changing: how much to spend on refueling, how often to service a car, where to charge the battery, whether to wait for subsidies or be afraid of technology obsolescence. Each new choice is not only a purchase, but also a statement: I believe in these technologies, I am ready to change.
