Swedish automaker Volvo Cars continues to consistently implement its zero-accident strategy and is unveiling a major technology upgrade for its flagship EX90 electric SUV, scheduled for implementation beginning with the 2026 model year. The centerpiece of this upgrade will be the installation of a completely new, next-generation central processing unit (CPU), configured with two NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin chips, delivering unprecedented computing power at 500 trillion operations per second. This powerful hardware foundation will dramatically expand the vehicle's capabilities in the areas of active safety, collision avoidance, and comprehensive driver support through the integrated use of data, specialized software, and artificial intelligence algorithms.

The global launch of the CPU upgrade program for all EX90 customer vehicles is scheduled for early 2026. Importantly, this upgrade will also be available to owners of 2025 models, underscoring the brand's long-term strategy. An enhanced 800-volt electrical architecture, designed to significantly reduce the time required to charge the high-voltage battery, will also be available in select key markets. Among the new safety features introduced with the update, highlights include the intelligent Road Hazard Alert system, which can warn the driver in advance of risks such as slippery surfaces or accidents ahead.

Particularly noteworthy is the deep integration of the e-Call automatic emergency call system with the Emergency Stop Assist system, which is activated in situations where the driver stops responding to the car's multi-level warnings about inattention or hands-off steering, which could be caused by a sudden deterioration in health. In this case, the ESA system takes full control of the vehicle and brings it safely to a stop within the current lane. Immediately after coming to a complete stop, the e-call function automatically establishes a voice connection with a Volvo Cars emergency call center operator, who, if necessary, can inform passengers of the situation and immediately dispatch an emergency vehicle. Additionally, the EX90 features an advanced emergency steering system in low-light conditions, as well as Park Pilot Assist, an intelligent parking assistant that significantly simplifies parallel parking.

According to Volvo Cars CTO Anders Bell, the additional computing power opens up entirely new possibilities for using artificial intelligence, big data, and software to enhance the EX90's overall safety and performance, which translates into access to the latest safety and support features for vehicle owners. He also noted that the infotainment system and the comprehensive high-voltage battery charging management systems will be regularly improved through over-the-air updates. As a welcome addition to its technological innovations, the 2026 EX90 will feature an electrochromic panoramic glass sunroof, first introduced on the recently announced ES90 sedan. This allows the driver to adjust the glass's transparency at the touch of a button, effectively reducing glare and providing additional privacy for passengers. Taken together, these improvements form one of the most significant upgrade packages in the model's history.
