Italian automaker Alfa Romeo is unveiling an updated version of its Tonale compact crossover for the 2026 model year, which has undergone a number of significant changes in both design and technology. Visual updates are concentrated at the front of the car, which features a redesigned grille with a refreshed horizontal pattern and a more distinctive front bumper, now adorned with a large air intake with black accents, giving the model a more aggressive and sculpted appearance. A wider track at both the front and rear axles, as well as a shorter front sill, further enhance the car's sporty character even when stationary.
The available exterior color palette has also undergone significant changes, with three new shades available: Rosso Brera, Verde Monza, and Giallo Ocra, designed to emphasize the model's unique personality. The manufacturer's signature emblems are now available in a strict black and white color scheme, marking a departure from the traditional blue and red color scheme of the logo and giving the model a more modern and understated look. The interior has also been updated, with new trim materials and color combinations, including red leather with contrast stitching, offered for the first time on this model. The front seats have received expanded functionality, featuring eight-way power adjustment, heating, ventilation, and four-way lumbar support.
The most significant and much-discussed change to the Tonale lineup is the company's complete abandonment of the previously offered plug-in hybrid powertrain in favor of a gasoline-only engine. From now on, the crossover will be available exclusively with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 268 horsepower and 400 Newton-meters of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, which is standard on all trims. Thus, the hybrid version, with its 1.3-liter engine and rear-mounted electric motor, which combined to produce 285 horsepower and an all-electric range of 53 kilometers, is completely discontinued.
Buyers of the updated Tonale will be offered a choice of three basic trim levels, each with its own unique character and feature set. The base Sprint trim level features eighteen-inch wheels, fabric upholstery, and a starting price of $39,745. The more extensive Veloce trim level includes nineteen-inch wheels, red Brembo brake calipers, ventilated leather seats, a hands-free trunk release, and adaptive dampers. The flagship Sport Speciale trim level features twenty-inch wheels with an exclusive design, a black roof, glossy black Brembo brake calipers, and an interior trimmed in black and pearl Alcantara with elegant white contrast stitching. Prices for the Veloce and Sport Speciale trim levels start at $44,245. Deliveries of new cars to the company's dealers are expected to begin before the end of the current calendar year.
