The Ukrainian parliament made an important decision on the further development of electric transport in the country, officially extending the preferential regime for importing electric vehicles without customs duties or value-added tax. This legislative initiative received significant support from members of parliament, who see this step as an opportunity to continue actively promoting environmentally friendly transport among the general public and businesses. This exemption will now be valid until the end of 2026, allowing thousands of Ukrainian families to realize their desire to switch to modern, technologically advanced vehicles.
Extending the special regime for importing electric vehicles has several strategically important goals for the overall development of the country, as it directly stimulates increased consumer demand for zero-emission vehicles. The environmental aspect of this issue cannot be overstated, as the increased number of electric vehicles on the country's roads inevitably leads to a significant improvement in air quality, especially in large industrial cities and urban agglomerations. At the same time, the state demonstrates its consistent support for all owners of such vehicles and entrepreneurs who invest in the creation and development of the necessary charging infrastructure throughout Ukraine.
It should be emphasized that the adopted bill makes absolutely no changes to other existing tax incentives for electric vehicle owners and manufacturers, guaranteeing the stability and predictability of this market segment. A complete exemption from excise taxes and import duties will also be maintained for components and assemblies used in domestic assembly or full-scale production of electric vehicles in our country. According to one of the authors of this legislative initiative, such stable and long-term conditions are essential for electric vehicles to gradually cease being a luxury and become a truly accessible mode of transportation not only in the capital but also in the most remote regions of the country.
Special customs preferences for the import of electric vehicles were initially introduced in Ukraine back in 2018 and have proven exceptionally effective over the past period. The total number of registered electric vehicles has increased more than fifteenfold, placing Ukraine among the leaders among Eastern European countries in terms of overall growth and development of modern electric transport infrastructure. The extension of these preferential terms is a logical continuation of successful government policy aimed at building an environmentally sustainable and technologically advanced future for the entire country.
