German automaker BMW has begun the active testing phase of the updated compact crossover X1, the model of which is awaiting a planned and, apparently, quite large-scale update as part of the transition to the new Neue Klasse architecture. Camouflaged prototypes of the future new product were spotted on public roads, which allowed us to draw the first conclusions about the upcoming transformations that will affect not only the exterior, but also the interior equipment of the car. Comparison with the current generation of the model clearly demonstrates the decisive step of the brand towards a more strict and technological design, breaking with some of the previous traditions of the brand.
The visual changes to the front are the most radical and immediately reveal the car's belonging to the new Neue Klasse design philosophy. Instead of the usual massive radiator grille, a thin and elongated black panel is now used, integrated into the body and devoid of traditional frames, which radically distinguishes it from all previous models of the brand. The headlights have a completely new look, becoming significantly thinner and more aggressive, and are connected by a thin LED strip, creating a continuous light signal that cannot be confused with other cars. The lower part of the bumper has been revised in favor of a larger and more functional air intake, which, together with the new bonnet, which has a pronounced central groove, gives the car a much more dynamic and ready-to-move look even when stationary.
The side view confirms that the design evolution is comprehensive, since here you can see the appearance of new retractable door handles, which are recessed into the plane of the doors to improve aerodynamic performance, as well as completely different in shape and size side rear-view mirrors. The silhouette of the car has become more elongated and streamlined, which also relates it to the latest electric models of the concern, in particular with the iX3 concept, while the characteristic window line remains a recognizable element linking the new model with the previous generation of the model. The rear of the body did not go unnoticed by engineers and designers, receiving completely new lights, which have become narrower and more graphic, as well as a modified bumper with different graphics of light guides and relief, which generally makes the perception of the rear of the car wider and more stable.
The interior of the new product remains outside the scope of spy photos, but according to information obtained from closed sources, the company is preparing significant improvements for the interior, the main one of which will be the introduction of the latest version of the iDrive multimedia system with a huge screen with a diagonal of seventeen point nine tenths of an inch, which will be an unprecedented solution for cars of this class. The main functions will also be controlled via a touch panel and voice commands, and an extended projection on the windshield will also be available, displaying all the necessary information in the driver's field of vision. As for the power units, an evolutionary approach is expected here with the preservation of the current range of engines, including gasoline, diesel and hybrid versions, which will be adapted to stricter environmental standards of the future. The official premiere of the updated BMW X1 is scheduled for 2026.
